Badminton is a fast paced and exciting game in which you can build skills, finesse and strategy. Players at our recreational badminton clubs show a range of skill levels, but anyone can come and develop their skills and make some friends along the way. Most clubs predominantly play doubles, although when there aren’t too many sitting on the bench, singles games can happen too. Whatever your skill level, badminton is always fun and a great way to relieve stress, stay in shape and keep the brain active too.

Badminton Facts

Shuttle Speed

A badminton shuttle is the fastest moving projectile in all of the racquet sports. The fastest badminton shuttle speed was recorded at 565 km/h (351.07 mph) by Satwiksairaj Rankireddy (India).

Badminton’s Origins

The earliest forerunner of badminton was a game stemming from India called Poona from before 1500 BC, although the first rules of Poona weren’t drawn up until 1873. From there, it was brought to Britain by English officers. Subsequently, the game underwent many revisions.

Shortest Match

The shortest match on record was only six minutes long – an average of three minutes per game. In 1996 in Hong Kong, Ra Kyung-min of South Korea defeated Julia Mann of England 11 to 2 and 11 to 1. Ouch. By contrast, watch this single rally from 2013, lasting a grueling two minutes. That’s a lot of work for one point.
